I have been using oils on my face and body for a number of years now and I love it, but it doesn’t quite replace a great lotion or cream for me. Perhaps old habits die hard, but I love the touch and consistency of a lotion. There’s something very soothing about it.
My first Fresh Faced order came with a sample of Pai’s Chamomile & Rosehip cream. I gave it shot and was shocked at how lovely it felt on my skin! It’s a relatively thick cream but didn’t feel greasy at all. Since spring was around the corner at that point and I wanted a lotion to layer over my serum oil, I chose the Geranium & Thistle Rebalancing Day Cream because it sounded a tad lighter.
Who they are:
Pai Organic Skin Care is a British line proudly made in London, with a task force of about 10 women. It was founded in 2007 by Sarah Brown, a former PR exec who had developed a severe skin allergy and was tired of taking anti-histamines to mask the problem. With £15000 in savings, she quit her job, retrained herself in cosmetic manufacturing amongst other related disciplines, and launched Pai 3 years later, a plant-based organic skin care line for very sensitive skin.
Pai Skin Care has been used on the film sets of Maleficent, Les Miserables, Black Swan and Thor (actors’ skin needs to be taken care of before and after makeup).
What it is:
Pai’s Geranium & Thistle Rebalancing Day cream is a mildly scented creamy white lotion pumped out of a tall frosted glass bottle, with a semi-soft plastic cap.
What it is made of (from their site):
This common garden plant has a cooling and calming effect on the skin, making it great for balancing combination complexions.
Extracted from the seeds of the Safflower thistle, this oil is packed with skin-friendly omega 6 and is excellent at clearing congested skin and reducing large pores.

I hate to admit it but I’m a sucker for packaging. I tend to lean towards androgynous designs, and Pai is a bit more feminine. Thus, my eyes kept skipping over them whenever I would shop around online, but the sample of the Chamomile & Rosehip cream changed all that. When I decided I wanted a cream moisturizer for the summer, I was hell bent on Pai. The Geranium & Thistle cream sounded like it fit the bill as it was for Oily/Combination skin.
The pump of the bottle is very easy to control, doesn’t splatter the product or pump too quickly. The cream itself looks thick on your finger but actually spreads like a lotion. My skin absorbs it quickly and it leaves a matte supple finish, which is amazing for me because all my past green moisturizers tend to leave a very shiny greasy finish. If it’s dry and/or cool outside (it usually is in Calgary) I pat the cream over top of a serum oil. If it’s humid and/or hot, I use it by itself or my serum oil by itself. Just depends how I’m feeling that morning.
The matte finish of the Geranium & Thistle Day cream makes for a great base for foundation – you need not worry about your makeup sliding off. The scent is very mild and refreshing – a wee bit minty. I happen to love minty smelling everything.
You may have noticed that I mentioned a semi-soft plastic cap earlier. This is really important to me! How often have you cracked a hard plastic cap of one of your bottle? It happens for no apparent reason at all and it drives me up the wall. This cap? Does not crack. That makes me smile.
