Experimenting with skincare and make-up tends to start around middle-high school, and the first day of school is when you want to look your best, whether you’re going back to the same school or starting at a new one. Arduous hours and lengthy text conversations are spent trying to pick an outfit + makeup + hair that makes you look a little more grown up and collected, and doesn’t look like you’re trying too hard. My mom always told me from when I was in junior high that when one starts to wear makeup, don’t skimp on quality, even though it’s more money. Always choose makeup and skincare products that perform. That has stayed with me to this day.
So if you’re a teen going into high school, a young adult going into college, or a mom going shopping with her tween, make smart choices when purchasing products that go on your skin. Pick quality, not quantity.
Alright, enough with the lecture (har har)! Here are my top picks for…
Growing up, I had a LOT of acne. One of my biggest regrets was being so mean to my skin. I was convinced that scrubbing the heck out of it and loading it up with drying chemicals would clear it up, but I was wrong, so BE KIND TO YOUR SKIN. Boscia, a semi-natural Japanese skincare line, has this great kit for you to try out 5 of their preservative-free botanically-based products, aimed at getting rid of blemish-causing bacteria – without compromising your skin.
I wish I had asked my mom to bring me to get my eyebrows done professionally the first time, but I was too scared. Haha. I’m convinced I wouldn’t have overplucked otherwise. That’s my best advice when it comes to brows, because afterwards you can clean them up yourself with the hardest working tweezers on the planet. This baby is super sharp and will find every baby hair you have up there, so don’t go tweezer happy. I’ve had mine for 10 years and though it’s not as sharp as when I first purchased it, it still doesn’t require any sharpening whatsoever. Other tweezers simply do not compare.
Even if you believe you’re acne-ville, don’t freak out at the word oil. These juicy beauties are infused with 100% pure Argan oil which will not break you out. Super good for your skin. With a few quick swipes on your lips and cheeks and a little blending with your fingers, no one will be able to tell you’ve pulled an all-nighter (as much as I love concealer, blush is my go-to to look awake!).
Nail polishes are one of the cheapest makeup products around and it’s hard not to be fickle and collect a thousand of them, even as a student. I try to moderate by using a good quality base coat and top coat, to make my cheap polishes look extra good and last that much longer. This kit includes a matte base coat that looks great on it’s own, a hard working top coat, a nail filer and one individually packaged polish remover pad. To make it even better, these products are 5-free: no formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, DBP, or camphor.
Invest in a great set of makeup brushes because even dirt cheap makeup can look amazing applied with quality tools. A set of brushes can last you a lifetime if you don’t abuse them and clean them properly and regularly. This super soft 8 piece set has got your complexion, eyes and cheeks covered. My favourites are the angled, smudger and small contour (let’s just call it blush) brushes.
Guys, I haven’t forgotten about you! Just because you’re a dude doesn’t mean you should have lizard skin. With this 3 piece set, you can wash your face with a proper cleanser instead of your shampoo lather or bar soap, have a nice morning shave with their best-selling shaving cream, and moisturize your face with a soothing non-sticky lotion with SPF 20. They call it a traveler set, but the sizes are substantial: 2x 88 ml + 1x 44 ml.
